Wisdom
Wisdom
Wisdom. If you ask 10 different people "what is wisdom?"; you may get 10 different answers. At the very first when you read the topic immediately an idea leap into you mind. In this era of the internet, toleration, and political correctness; our very thoughts are channeled through screens and filters to try to mold us into the norm for how we think and what we think.
One thought on wisdom would be knowing a lot about a certain subject. Another would be the skillful application of knowledge into a situation dealing with a subject.
I have an opinion and you have an opinion. That in itself standing along does not make it true wisdom. True wisdom is in relationship with a set of standards that are bigger than you and I. True wisdom is the result of absolute facts set in motion by the creator of this universe. The universe and mankind was created by this supreme being. Truth is what actually happened, what is happening, and what will happen in the future. There is only one book that answers all these questions adequately. It has been attacked for thousands of years, maligned, and criticized but It is still around. When Beth and I were in Turkey everywhere we went in Asia Minor was full of early church history. It has not been dis-proven. In fact there are testimonies of thousands of people down through the years of lives who have been transformed by it and rescued from desperate situations. This book is the Bible, the Word of God. The Bible is a Jewish book, with a Jewish savior, that reaches out to the whole world in mercy. Look at the Jew, he is a miracle. After thousands of years of exile they are coming back into the land and now once again exist as a nation. They still speak Hebrew. They still hold to the Word of God. Yet they are despised and hated by the majority of the world. They are God's chosen people and God is there defender. God refers to them as "the apple of his eye", he is very sensitive to what happens to and in that country.
Let us look and see what the Bible says about wisdom. Let us look how it defines this concept. By looking at it we have a solid standard which has existed for thousands of years and will still be around when you and I are gone from this world. I don't know about you, but I want stability and durability in what I hold onto. There is no stronger anchor than the Supreme Being that created the Universe and created us in His image.
His words are faithful and true; He framed the existence of truth.
In the Bible there are five books that are referred to as the Wisdom Library. They are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. In these 5 books is much about of knowledge in relation to actions by people and God. Lets pull excerpts from these books plus one other to define our subject.
Job 28:20 "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?
21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air.
22 Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.'
23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,
24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
25 When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,
26 when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm,
27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it.
28 And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.'"
Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 3:13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.
6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs 24:14 Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
Isaiah 33:6 He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.
The "Fear of the Lord" repeats over and over again. God is Holy, we are sinners. We are only offered mercy through faith in Jesus Christ. God forgives sin but he also talks about the consequences of sin that follow Proverbs 28:9 "If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable."
Then Proverbs says 28:13 " He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. 14 Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble." If we purposely choose to sin, to go against his rules, we one day can pay dearly. We should fear and respect the one who has the power to throw an unbelieving soul into Hell if they never repent.
